- Sri Harmandir Sahib is the central place of worship of the Sikh faith, managed by the SGPC under the Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925.
- Guru Ram Das began the pool and the town in 1570; Guru Arjan Dev built the temple from the 1580s and installed the Adi Granth in 1604. According to the SGPC, the Sufi saint Mian Mir laid the foundation stone.
- The temple was destroyed in the 18th century and rebuilt from 1764; Maharaja Ranjit Singh had it covered in gilded copper and gold leaf in the early 19th century (gold leaf in 1830). It is not solid gold.
- There is no ticket and no booking. The complex (the walkway around the pool and the langar) never closes. The sanctum closes each night after Sukhasan for washing and reopens at about 2 am (summer) or 3 am (winter).
- Palki Sahib (morning procession of the Guru Granth Sahib to the sanctum): about 4 am in summer, 5 am in winter. Sukhasan (return to the Akal Takht): about 10:45 pm in summer, 9:45 pm in winter.
- Rules: head covered for everyone; shoes and socks removed and left at the joda ghar; feet washed; modest dress; no tobacco, alcohol or intoxicants. Since 15 December 2025 their sale (and meat) is banned in the walled city.
- Photography: quick still photos on the walkway around the pool are tolerated (SGPC, July 2024); no videos and no photos inside the sanctum.
- People of every faith are welcome. More than 100,000 people visit on a typical day; the langar serves tens of thousands of meals daily, around 100,000 on busy days.
- The queue to enter the sanctum is usually two hours or more; longer on Sundays and festivals; shortest before dawn and late at night.
- Best months: October to March. Average highs are about 39 C in May; monsoon July to early September; fog on December and January mornings.
- Jallianwala Bagh (massacre of 13 April 1919) is a few minutes' walk away. The Partition Museum (Town Hall) opens 10 am to 6 pm and closes on Mondays.
- The Attari-Wagah retreat ceremony, about 28 km away, is held daily around sunset in a scaled-down form since April 2025 (gates shut, no handshake). The UK and US advise against travel within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border, which includes the ceremony.
- Amritsar Junction station is about 2 km from the temple; the airport (ATQ) is about 11 km from the city centre. Delhi trains: Vande Bharat about 5.5 hours, Shatabdi about 6 hours.

## Corrections to claims found elsewhere

- The temple is not made of solid gold: it is marble and copper, with gilded copper panels and gold leaf on the upper storeys. Published gold weights contradict each other; this site prints none.
- The sanctum is not open 24 hours: only the complex is. The sanctum closes nightly for washing.
- 1604 is when the Adi Granth was installed; construction began in the 1580s.
- Socks are not allowed inside: SGPC guidance asks visitors to walk barefoot.
- Non-Sikhs, including Muslims, may enter; the four doors symbolise openness to all.
- The Attari-Wagah ceremony is not cancelled: it reopened to the public on 21 May 2025 in a scaled-down form.
